Who we are
Afrotonik was born in 2016 out of a shared passion for African culture, music, and dance. A group of creative friends came together with a vision: to bring people together through events that celebrate and showcase Afro culture in Montreal.
The founding team, consisting of three DJs, a professional dancer, and a photographer, noticed a lack of platforms highlighting Afro music and culture in the city. With their extensive experience in entertainment and event production, they saw a unique opportunity to fill this gap. Combining their diverse skills, they pitched a multidisciplinary event concept to the Village au Pied-du-Courant, featuring DJ performances, live music, dance, and captivating visuals. Their first event, launched on September 3, 2016, drew over 3,000 attendees. Following this success, they hosted subsequent editions in 2017, 2018, and 2019, attracting crowds of 2,000 to 3,000 people each time.
Beyond the summer season, Afrotonik continued to keep the spirit alive by hosting indoor events throughout the year, bringing people together for joyous and memorable experiences. Over time, the collective expanded its reach by organizing monthly events and collaborating with notable venues like the Société des arts technologiques, New City Gas, and Newspeak. Afrotonik also made its mark at major festivals such as Mural and Igloofest, and even took part in the iconic Boiler Room series. These achievements have allowed Afrotonik to build a strong reputation in the event industry, collaborating with renowned artists and forging valuable connections in the performing arts scene.
Afrotonik's mission has always been to create vibrant spaces that celebrate Afro culture while providing a welcoming environment for people to come together, dance, and share in the joy of music. As its social media presence has grown, so has its community, united by a shared love for Afro culture. Today, Afrotonik stands as a respected brand and a cornerstone of Montreal’s cultural landscape.
